Quality wooden kitchenware—cutting boards, bowls, utensils, and serving pieces—can last for decades with proper care. Wood is a natural material that responds to moisture, temperature, and use, so treating it well preserves beauty, performance, and hygiene. Here is what you need to know.

Cleaning Your Wooden Cutting Boards and Kitchenware

  • Wash with warm water and mild dish soap

  • Wipe clean rather than soaking

  • Stand or dry upright with good airflow

  • Never put wood in the dishwasher

  • Never leave it submerged in water

For deeper cleaning, sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda, scrub with a lemon half, rinse, and dry.

Conditioning and Oiling

Wood needs moisture protection to stay healthy and resist cracking. Regular oiling keeps wood nourished and prevents drying.

Use:

  • Food-safe mineral oil

  • Board cream / conditioning wax

  • Beeswax and mineral oil blends

Avoid:

  • Olive oil

  • Vegetable oil

  • Cooking oils of any kind(these go rancid)

Apply oil when the wood looks dry, feels rough, or loses its luster. For frequently used items, once every 2–4 weeks is ideal.

Heat and Environment

  • Do not store near heat vents or stoves

  • Avoid extreme temperature swings

  • Never microwave wooden kitchenware

Heat dries wood and causes warping and splitting.

Knife Marks and Wear

Scratches and knife marks are normal signs of honest use. They do not damage the board. Over time, boards can also be resurfaced and refinished, extending their life even further.

When to Replace

High-quality wooden boards rarely “wear out.” Replace only if severely cracked, deeply warped, or structurally damaged.

Summary

Wash, dry, oil, avoid heat—and your wooden kitchenware will stay beautiful for years. Proper care preserves performance and protects your investment.
